Whoa, indeed!

We recently obtained a beautiful collection of 14 ancient bells, all of them about 40mm (1-1/2 inches) in size, found in the Balkans, likely to have been cast sometime between the time of Christ and the 7th century, more probably toward the latter end of that period— and therefore likely to be Byzantine.

Bells of this kind were usually used as horse bells or on charms but, as the original dealer writes, ‘ the quantity found over the years indicates mass use for some purpose, so the alternate opinion that they are a form of “protomoney” may have some validity.’ (Learn more about their dating here.)

These bells are in very fine condition. In fact it's rare to find such intact specimens. The very few we’ve seen elsewhere were little more than lumps of bronze, but these are in great shape! Their iron clappers have not survived, of course, since iron oxidizes much faster than bronze— but a few even have their clapper hangers intact.

All have been carefully cleaned and professionally curated. They retain their original patina and are obviously, unquestionably ancient.

We therefore unconditionally guarantee their authenticity— it's something you can tell just from their patina. We could, of course, obtain and pass on to you a certificate of authenticity, but we feel that’s pretty silly— for if someone were in the business of faking antiquities, they could certainly fake certificates to go with them! But if for some reason you're not satisfied, or can show us that we're mistaken— just return your purchase and we'll give you a full refund.

Lovely to hold in your hand, and even more lovely for their connection with the fabled past of Byzantium, Rome, and the Balkans, they make an exquisite collection, and we hate to part with them. Just imagine receiving one of these gems for Christmas!

Or offering one as a reward for a major donation to your church’s bell fund!

Their price is $200 each.

Now’s your chance to own one of the earliest forerunners of the huge bells that once again grace Russia's great Orthodox temples! Remember, ancient bells of this fine condition do not often surface.

In fact, Mark and I both snatched up a couple of them for ourselves, as soon as we saw them!
